Canada Market Round-Up

The S&P/TSX Composite Index (TSX: ^TSX) began the previous week with strong bullish momentum, climbing 321.00 points (+1.30%) to close at 25,031.51 on May 2, 2025. However, the rally lost steam by May 5, as the index pulled back 77.98 points (-0.31%), ending the session at 24,953.52. The initial recovery was broad-based, with notable gains in basic materials, consumer non-cyclicals, and consumer cyclicals. In contrast, healthcare, technology, energy, real estate, industrials, utilities, and financials underperformed over the same period. On the economic front, Statistics Canada reported that real GDP contracted by 0.2% in February, signalling potential headwinds for future growth. Technically, the index continues to trade above both its rising trendline support and the 21-period Simple Moving Average (SMA), reinforcing the view that the broader uptrend remains intact despite short-term volatility. Key resistance is now seen near the 25,400 level, while support is identified around 24,400. The weekly Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 54.01, indicating stabilizing momentum and continued underlying buying interest in the market.

On the macro front, the upcoming major economic events that may impact the Canadian market sentiment include CA Employment Change, US Final Wholesale Inventories m/m and US Unemployment Claims.
