Record Sales Lift Revenue While Gross Margin Slides to 12.7%
Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI), known as Supermicro, released unaudited results for fiscal first quarter 2027 on November 3, 2026, covering the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Net sales reached USD 19.9 billion, roughly 80% above the prior quarter's USD 11.1 billion (own arithmetic). Gross margin was 12.7% against 17.5% in the previous quarter, while non-GAAP gross margin was 12.8% compared with 9.5% a year earlier. Net income came in at USD 1,594 million, or USD 1.75 per diluted share, and non-GAAP EPS was USD 1.81. Operating expenses were USD 476.6 million, and the tax provision of USD 435.5 million equated to about 21% of pretax income, a ratio calculated internally. The chief executive called it record revenue and pointed to the Data Center Building Block Solutions line.
Receivables and Inventory Absorb the Cash Profits Produced
Operations used USD 434 million of cash even though the company earned USD 1.6 billion. At June 30, 2026, receivables stood at USD 6.1 billion; they reached USD 9.7 billion by quarter-end, while inventory moved from USD 12.9 billion to USD 15.1 billion. Deferred revenue increased by USD 3.05 billion, which partly offset the Working Capital drain. Cash and equivalents eased to USD 6.9 billion from USD 7.5 billion, and bank borrowings plus convertible notes added up to USD 8.6 billion. Interest expense jumped to USD 82.5 million from USD 24.9 million a year earlier, and preferred dividends paid reached USD 63.7 million. When sales scale this quickly, customers pay after shipment, so profit appears on the income statement before the cash arrives.
Unaudited Figures, a Thinner Margin Outlook and the Second-Quarter Guide
The company cautioned that these figures are preliminary because its financial closing procedures are incomplete, and its auditor has not audited, reviewed or performed procedures on them, so final results could differ materially. Looking ahead to the December 31, 2026 quarter, net sales of USD 19.5 billion to USD 21.5 billion and GAAP EPS of USD 1.59 to USD 1.83 are projected, which at the midpoint means little sequential expansion (own comparison). Named risks include a more concentrated customer base, lower margins as it pursues larger deals, falling average selling prices and tariffs. The call was held at 5:00 p.m. ET on November 3, 2026.
Where Things Stand
The cash outflow reflects working capital, not a failed quarter. Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI) booked USD 1,594 million of net income, yet receivables and inventory tied up more cash than that profit produced, so operations consumed USD 434 million. The concerns are that the numbers are unaudited and preliminary, margins are below the prior quarter and USD 8.6 billion of Debt and convertible notes exceeds USD 6.9 billion of cash. The next tests are collection of the USD 9.7 billion in receivables, the final audited figures and whether second-quarter sales reach the guided USD 19.5 billion to USD 21.5 billion.
