Profit Rebounds as the Prior-Year Settlement Falls Away
Grand Canyon Education (NASDAQ:LOPE) filed its Quarterly Report on November 4, 2026, covering the three months ended September 30, 2026. Net income was USD 43.0 million, up from USD 16.3 million, and diluted EPS came in at USD 1.67 against USD 0.58. The filing shows that the earlier period contained a USD 35.0 million settlement of a qui tam lawsuit plus USD 2.4 million of Lease termination and Impairment charges. The effective tax rate was 20.0% versus 24.9%, helped by USD 5.0 million of contributions in lieu of state income taxes recorded in both periods. The company supplies technology, counseling and Marketing services to colleges and universities, with Grand Canyon University as its largest partner.
Amended Master Services Agreement Changes the Fee Base
Starting July 1, 2026, a new fifteen-year agreement with Grand Canyon University reset how Grand Canyon Education (NASDAQ:LOPE) gets paid. Fees now equal 60% of tuition and academic-related fees alone, instead of 60% of revenue that also covered housing, food service, athletics and other ancillary operations. The contract also eliminates the university's right to terminate for convenience and ends a reimbursement payment for certain academic costs. Technology and academic services expense fell 4.1% to USD 43.1 million, partly because of the change. Revenue per student eased slightly, and USD 7.5 million shifted into the fourth quarter because the fall semester began six days later.
Enrollment Mix, Marketing Spend and Repurchase Funding
Online enrollments at the university rose 7.1% to 115,520, while ground enrollments dropped 4.1% to 23,650. Off-campus classroom and laboratory site enrollments increased 12.6% to 7,780 across 48 sites. Marketing and communication costs grew 10.7% to USD 65.5 million, equal to 24.5% of revenue against 22.6%. Nine-month repurchases of USD 270.8 million helped cut cash and investments by USD 137.9 million since December 31, 2025. On September 28, 2026, the company also signed a USD 100 million revolving Credit Facility intended mainly for share repurchases. Pending Department of Education rulemaking and other regulatory changes affecting university partners remain a stated risk, and seasonality tends to lift fourth-quarter and first-quarter revenue.
Where Things Stand
Not mainly. The jump is largely a comparison effect, since the prior-year quarter absorbed a USD 35.0 million settlement, while service revenue grew a more modest 2.4%. Grand Canyon Education (NASDAQ:LOPE) gives no full-year guidance in the extract reviewed. Watch the USD 7.5 million revenue shift into the fourth quarter, marketing costs, ground campus enrollment and how the larger repurchase authorization and new credit line are used.
