Volume Gains Collide With a Large Non-Cash Charge
International Flavors & Fragrances (NYSE:IFF) submitted its Quarterly Report for the period ended September 30, 2026 on November 3, 2026. Third-quarter sales from continuing operations increased USD 73 million, or 4%, to USD 1.942 billion, and the company reported currency-neutral comparable sales growth of 5%. Consolidated volume rose 5%, with every segment adding to it. Taste sales grew 4% to USD 687 million, Health & Biosciences rose 1% to USD 566 million and Scent increased 6% to USD 689 million. Even so, continuing operations posted a net loss of USD 127 million, compared with income of USD 99 million a year earlier, which equates to a diluted loss of USD 0.50 per share versus Earnings of USD 0.39.
How the Held-for-Sale Charge and Rising Costs Weighed on Profit
The swing was driven mostly by a USD 236 million loss on assets classified as held for sale, tied to the Botanicals & Food Enhancements disposal group, along with a USD 23 million Goodwill Impairment on the same group. Assets held for sale are carried at the lower of Book Value or expected sale price minus selling costs, so any shortfall is recognized as a loss at once. These are accounting charges tied to planned exits. Gross Profit still rose 3% to USD 825 million, although gross margin eased to 42.5% from 42.8%, helped by a USD 7 million Tariff refund. Selling and administrative expenses climbed 11% to USD 387 million, and operating profit slid 16% to USD 160 million.
Divestiture Timing, Tax Effects and Forward Risks
Net loss attributable to shareholders was USD 55 million, or USD 0.22 per diluted share, because discontinued operations contributed USD 72 million of income, or USD 0.28 per share. Those results include the Food Ingredients group, which the company agreed on May 29, 2026 to divest, with closing expected in the second quarter of 2027. Completion depends on regulatory clearances, so timing and final proceeds carry uncertainty. The effective tax rate of 5.2% benefited from a discrete gain tied to resolving a Mexican tax matter, which is unlikely to repeat. Nine-month sales of USD 5.802 billion ran 1% below a year earlier, reflecting the 2025 exit from Pharma Solutions.
Where Things Stand
The loss shows up on the income statement but mainly reflects how planned disposals are booked rather than weaker demand, since 5% volume growth across all segments shows the core businesses are selling more. For International Flavors & Fragrances (NYSE:IFF), the weaker points are a 200 basis point drop in Operating Margin and higher regulatory and incentive costs. Nine-month Net Income still stood at USD 164 million, against a loss of USD 379 million a year ago. Investors will watch whether the disposal groups close on schedule, whether added regulatory costs persist and how margins hold once divested units leave the numbers.
