A Liquids Infrastructure Specialist
Gibson Energy Inc. (TSX:GEI) is a liquids infrastructure company focused on the storage, optimization, processing and gathering of Crude Oil and refined products, as well as waterborne vessel loading. Its core terminal Assets are in Hardisty and Edmonton in Alberta, Ingleside and Wink in Texas, with a Facility in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
At a dividend yield of 5.48%, TSX:GEI is a mainstay for Canadian Midstream income investors. The 2026 story has been a sharp rebound in cash flow after a period of elevated payout ratios.
Record Q3 2026 Results
Gibson reported its third-quarter 2026 results on November 3, describing an exceptional quarter with record consolidated and Infrastructure adjusted EBITDA. Distributable cash flow reached $120 million, a $34 million increase from the third quarter of 2025, driven by the factors behind higher adjusted EBITDA and partially offset by higher finance costs and current income tax.
Management said the Chauvin assets continue to exceed expectations, and in October the company placed its Wink-to-Gateway Integration Project into service. These developments mark a turnaround from the first quarter of 2026, when distributable cash flow fell to $73.9 million from $90.8 million a year earlier and Net Income turned to a small loss.
Dividend Growth and Policy
The quarterly dividend is now $0.45 per share, or $1.80 annualized, compared with $0.43 a year earlier, an increase of about 4.7%. In the first half of 2026, dividends totaled $0.90 per share versus $0.86 in the same period of 2025. The board declared the latest $0.45 dividend in November, payable January 15, 2027 to shareholders of record on December 30, 2026.
Gibson has a long record of steady dividend increases, and the 2026 raise came even while the payout ratio was elevated, which signals management confidence in contracted cash flow growth from recent acquisitions and projects.
Payout Ratio and Cash Flow Coverage
The payout ratio is the key metric to watch. On a trailing twelve-month basis it was 90% after the first quarter of 2026, 88% after the second and 82% after the third. A year earlier, in the third quarter of 2025, it stood at 85%. Management has said the ratio should keep improving as a full twelve months of Chauvin cash flow is reflected in trailing results.
The Chauvin acquisition, valued at $400 million and closed on May 1, 2026, is supported by long-term take-or-pay and area-of-dedication agreements, and was expected to deliver mid single-digit accretion to distributable cash flow per share. The infrastructure-only payout ratio was 83% at mid-year, which shows that contracted infrastructure cash flow covers the bulk of the dividend.
Balance Sheet and Growth Projects
Net Debt to adjusted EBITDA was 3.9 times on a trailing basis after the third quarter, down from 4.2 times at mid-year after the Chauvin purchase. Gibson holds investment-grade ratings of BBB (low) from Morningstar DBRS and BBB- from S&P.
Growth projects include the Hardisty Connection project, sanctioned earlier in 2026, and the newly sanctioned Chauvin pipeline expansion, which will raise capacity by approximately 50%. Earlier, Gibson recorded record Canadian throughput of 1.5 million barrels per day and a new high of 717,000 barrels per day at Gateway after a dredging project.
Risks Dividend Investors Should Watch
The Marketing segment is volatile and can swing results, as seen in 2025. Leverage near 4 times leaves limited room for missteps, and rising finance costs can absorb cash. Execution risk on new projects and changes in crude oil export flows could also affect volumes.
Because the payout ratio remains above 80%, any setback in infrastructure cash flow would reduce the cushion for further increases.
Is the Gibson Energy Dividend Sustainable?
The $1.80 annual dividend looks sustainable and is becoming safer. The payout ratio is falling, distributable cash flow is at record levels, and contracted assets provide visibility.
Investors should watch the payout ratio trend toward management’s targets, leverage and progress on the Chauvin expansion as TSX:GEI moves into 2027.
