Higher Plywood Prices Carry Wood Products Into Profit as Revenue Rises 8%
Boise Cascade (NYSE:BCC) filed its report on Nov 2, 2026, with figures for the three months ending Sep 30, 2026. Top-line results reached $1,802.2 million, an 8.1% gain, while Operating Income rose to $55.8 million, versus $32.3 million, lifting Operating Margin from 1.9% to 3.1%.
Net income for the quarter was $36.4 million, compared with $21.8 million. Diluted per-share earnings were $1.04, while the prior year showed $0.58. For the nine-month stretch of 2026, Net Income came to $111.6 million ($3.15 diluted), compared with $124.1 million ($3.28) a year before.
Boise Cascade is an Idaho-based company that distributes building materials and manufactures wood products. Customers include builders of single-family and multi-family homes, plus remodeling and light commercial projects.
Softer Starts and a Mix Shift Pressure the Distribution Margin
Sales kept growing even though U.S. housing starts declined 4% during the quarter, reaching 340,900 units, and single-family starts slid 2%. Management pointed to elevated fuel costs and higher benchmark rates, which weighed on buyer affordability and nudged builders toward build-to-order methods.
Revenue in Building Materials Distribution grew 7%, hitting $1,669.5 million. Net pricing contributed 5% and Volume 2%. Commodity items surged 15% and general line products advanced 4%.
Segment income nonetheless dropped $3.0 million, to $51.3 million, as selling and distribution outlays climbed $6.9 million while gross margin fell to 14.3% from 15.1% of sales. A tilt toward lower-margin commodities explains the margin pressure.
From a Year-Ago Loss to $16.1 Million of Segment Income in Wood Products
Wood Products sales grew 16%, reaching $461.2 million, while segment income hit $16.1 million, reversing a $12.1 million loss a year earlier. Plywood prices per thousand square feet rose 31%, averaging $425 against $325, although plywood shipments fell 7%.
Laminated veneer lumber volume rose 18% and I-joist volume climbed 10%, while engineered wood pricing was unchanged year over year. Greater per-unit production costs partly offset the gains in those product lines, according to the filing.
Operating cash generation reached $146.3 million over nine months, versus $123.1 million. Capital outlays were $90.4 million compared with $187.4 million, and the full-year 2026 Capital Expenditure outlook sits between $120 million and $140 million, not counting acquisitions.
Quarterly Payout of $0.23 on Dec 16 Precedes a Seasonal Slowdown and Lower 2027 Starts
On Oct 29, 2026 the board approved a $0.23-per-share quarterly distribution, set for payment on Dec 16, 2026 to shareholders of record as of Dec 1. Through nine months the company retired 1,466,250 shares via Buybacks costing $112.8 million, with roughly $120 million of approval remaining following October purchases. Debt at quarter end totaled $452.5 million.
Management anticipates a slower fourth quarter, reflecting normal winter seasonality. Preliminary industry forecasts see 2027 starts retreating at a mid-single-digit rate compared with 2026.
