An Investment Gain Overshadows Operating Results

Bio-Rad Laboratories (NYSE:BIO) lodged its Quarterly Report on November 4, 2026. Net Income attributable to the company reached USD 458.6 million, compared with a USD 341.9 million loss in the year-earlier period, and Diluted Earnings per Share moved from a loss of USD 12.70 to USD 17.02. Non-operating items drove the change: a USD 588.2 million fair value increase on equity securities and a loan receivable, including a USD 583.2 million holding gain on the Sartorius stake. In the prior-year quarter that same stake generated a USD 505.1 million holding loss.

Flat Top Line, Narrower Margins and Higher Restructuring

Net sales came to USD 656.4 million, up 0.5%, or about 0.7% on a currency-neutral basis. Clinical Diagnostics Revenue advanced 2.7% to USD 401.8 million on quality systems and diabetes products, whereas Life Science fell 2.8% to USD 254.6 million on weaker process chromatography and academic research demand, partly cushioned by Droplet Digital PCR. Selling, general and administrative spending rose to USD 257.1 million from USD 206.8 million because of restructuring. Gross margin dropped roughly 3.8 points in Life Science and 1.6 points in Clinical Diagnostics, which the filing attributes to higher restructuring costs, while Research and Development held near USD 71.4 million. The effective tax rate was 14.9%, compared with 20.7%.

Restructuring Savings, Cash Position and Middle East Exposure

A restructuring plan begun on July 31, 2026 should cost about USD 80 million to USD 90 million before tax and trim annual operating expenses by USD 30 million to USD 35 million by the end of 2027. At September 30, 2026, cash and equivalents stood at USD 465.3 million and short-term investments at USD 1.20 billion. Nine-month Operating Cash Flow was USD 303.2 million, compared with USD 367.3 million a year earlier. Senior notes total USD 1.2 billion, and quarterly interest expense came to USD 12.3 million. Management said Middle East conflicts have hurt Demand and logistics in EMEA, particularly for Clinical Diagnostics, and expects that to persist through 2026. China accounts for a mid-single-digit share of year-to-date sales and its outlook is uncertain, while about 61% of sales originate outside the United States.

Where Things Stand

Mostly through a mark-to-market gain rather than operations. Bio-Rad Laboratories (NYSE:BIO) reported USD 17.02 per share, yet sales rose only 0.5%, gross margin fell about 2.5 points (calculated) and restructuring costs weighed on results. Because the Sartorius stake is carried at fair value, quarterly earnings can swing sharply in either direction. The next markers are progress on restructuring savings, stability in academic and China demand and conditions in EMEA.
