Crane Demand Fills the Order Book
Manitowoc (NYSE:MTW) released its third quarter 2026 figures on November 3, 2026. Management credited crane requests across the Americas, the Middle East and Asia Pacific for bookings of USD 676.4 million, which enlarged backlog to USD 1,110.9 million. That backlog has now widened for four quarters running. Net sales reached USD 613.8 million, against USD 553.4 million a year earlier, while non-new machine revenue, which includes aftermarket business, eased 1.9% to USD 174.1 million. Gross Profit advanced to USD 121.8 million, up from USD 102.6 million, a Margin near 19.8% against 18.5%, which is our own calculation. Operating profit went up to USD 31.8 million, compared with USD 18.5 million. For the nine-month span, sales totaled USD 1,703.3 million versus USD 1,563.8 million, and operating profit almost doubled to USD 66.0 million compared with USD 33.6 million, a level management described as exceeding its own forecasts.
Guidance Lift and the Question of Earnings Quality
Full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance now sits at USD 160 million to USD 175 million, and adjusted EPS guidance moved to USD 0.90 to USD 1.25, up from USD 0.80 to USD 1.20. A table in the release shows a net sales outlook of USD 2.3 billion to USD 2.4 billion without change, though the figure sits in the prior-guidance column, so readers should verify it in the complete release. GAAP net income was USD 11.0 million, compared with USD 5.0 million a year before, and the nine-month figure reached USD 19.2 million against USD 0.2 million. Taxes absorbed USD 7.8 million against pre-tax income of USD 18.8 million, interest cost totaled USD 9.2 million, and nine-month diluted EPS came to USD 0.52 versus USD 0.01.
Inventory Build, Debt Load and Cash Pressure
Stock on hand grew to USD 813.4 million, up from USD 683.9 million at year-end 2025, while the cash balance slid to USD 64.7 million from USD 77.3 million. Adding USD 461.1 million of long-term debt to USD 17.1 million of current borrowings and subtracting cash suggests net debt of roughly USD 413.5 million, a figure of our own. On the cash side, management put working-capital efficiency first and left its free Cash Flow forecast between USD 50 million and USD 70 million. Risk factors named by the company include tariffs, Inflation and Supply constraints that could slow turning backlog into sales, plus high Leverage and trade policy. A conference call was scheduled for November 4, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. ET.
Where Things Stand
Whether the 37.6% order gain becomes higher sales is still open for Manitowoc (NYSE:MTW), since delivery execution decides the outcome. The USD 1,110.9 million backlog offers visibility into the fourth quarter and 2027, yet sales rose just 10.9% while inventory grew and cash shrank. Tariff, supply chain and execution issues still stand between backlog and revenue. The lifted adjusted EBITDA range hints that management sees the third quarter as part of a wider trend, even with non-new machine sales down 1.9%.
