China Service Strength Pushes Ocean Operating Income Up 62%

Matson (NYSE:MATX) released third-quarter 2026 results on November 4, 2026. EBITDA reached USD 310.6 million, compared with USD 212.3 million. Ocean Transportation revenue advanced 24.1% to USD 891.3 million, while operating income climbed 62.2% to USD 239.1 million, widening the segment Margin to 26.8% from 20.5%. The chief executive pointed to robust Demand and firm freight rates in the China service, where speed and reliability stood out amid congestion at major Asian ports and a subdued prior-year comparison. Greater fuel-related Surcharge income also helped. Logistics operating income rose USD 2.5 million to USD 16.1 million.

Hawaii, Alaska and Guam Volumes Diverge

Hawaii volume slid 0.3% on softer general demand, as construction strength was countered by weaker tourism and higher energy-related inflation. Alaska fell 4.8% because southbound seafood volume dropped and the prior year had an extra northbound sailing, while Guam climbed 4.3%. Across the full year, the company expects China and Guam volume to rise and Hawaii and Alaska volume to edge lower. The SSAT joint venture contributed USD 7.4 million, which is USD 1.9 million less than a year earlier, and it is expected to finish below the USD 32.5 million recorded in 2025. Management describes domestic trade lanes and logistics as stable and expects the Guam and Alaska economies to hold steady near term.

Fourth-Quarter Operating Outlook, Capital Plans and Share Repurchases

Matson (NYSE:MATX) expects fourth-quarter Ocean Transportation operating income about 50% above the USD 136.0 million reported a year earlier, with Logistics modestly above USD 7.7 million. The company guides to a 20.0% tax rate, compared with 5.2% last year, when a one-time USD 18.5 million benefit applied. Full-year Depreciation and amortization should approximate USD 205 million, with capital expenditures near USD 130 million, vessel construction around USD 375 million and dry-docking about USD 45 million. Third-quarter vessel construction payments reached USD 52.5 million and dry-docking payments USD 15.9 million. Full-year interest income should be near USD 20 million, with net interest expense around USD 6 million. The company bought back about 0.3 million shares during the quarter. The outlook depends on elevated China freight rates lasting into early 2027.

Where Things Stand

Mostly China freight rates and volume. Matson (NYSE:MATX) turned a 24.1% rise in ocean revenue into a 62.2% jump in segment operating income, helped by a weak prior-year peak season, and lifted its fourth-quarter outlook. The risk is that freight rates ease, since the outlook assumes elevated conditions continue into early 2027 while Hawaii and Alaska volumes soften. Watch China rates, congestion at Asian ports, vessel construction spending and the fourth-quarter results.
