A Third Straight Profitable Quarter Built on Execution
Matrix Service (NASDAQ:MTRX) released fiscal 2027 first-quarter figures covering the period that ended September 30, 2026. Headquartered in Houston, the contractor designs, constructs and services energy, power and industrial infrastructure. Net income of USD 6.2 million marked its third consecutive profitable quarter, according to the CEO. Gross Profit reached USD 18.1 million compared with USD 14.2 million, a gain management attributes to disciplined project delivery and better overhead absorption. SG&A dropped by USD 3.0 million, aided by restructuring savings and a USD 1.9 million reduction tied to cash-settled compensation linked to the share price. Adjusted EBITDA equaled about 3.5% of revenue, compared with about 1.2% a year earlier (calculated), and management said the figures reflect structural changes made over the past 18 months.
Storage Gains Offset a 21% Slide in Utility and Power Work
Storage and Terminal Solutions Revenue grew 12% to USD 122.9 million, with gross margin of 9.0% against 5.9%. Utility and Power Infrastructure sales dropped 21% to USD 59.1 million because Natural Gas peak shaving jobs shrank; that unit's margin landed at 8.6%. Process and Industrial Facilities revenue increased to USD 37.4 million on Mining and minerals projects, but its margin eased to 3.7% from 5.1% following the settlement of a subcontractor dispute on a project finished in fiscal 2023. The company expects legal cost savings to offset that setback.
Order Intake, Backlog Mix and the New Repurchase Plan
Total backlog reached USD 872.6 million, of which USD 548.1 million belongs to Storage and Terminal Solutions. New orders of USD 138.8 million comprised a limited notice to proceed on a power generation Job tied to Data Center infrastructure, fresh mining work and front-end design for the tank farm at the America First Refining Facility in Brownsville, Texas. Storage booked only 0.2x, while Utility and Power was at 1.0x and Process and Industrial at 1.4x. Liquidity stood at USD 221.8 million with no Debt outstanding, including availability under a USD 90 million Credit facility. Management said the buyback would be executed opportunistically, subject to market conditions.
Where Things Stand
That depends on converting awards into revenue. Matrix Service (NASDAQ:MTRX) has delivered higher profit and wider margins, with EPS of USD 0.22, yet quarterly awards of USD 138.8 million trailed revenue of USD 219.4 million, so backlog is being used up faster than it is replenished. Management is pointing to bigger LNG, power, data center and mining opportunities that are waiting on final Investment decisions, while staffing and bid selectivity remain execution risks. Neither guidance nor a share price response is included in the extract reviewed. Watch the timing of those decisions, next quarter's backlog movement and how fast Buybacks run.
