Restructuring and an Argentina Translation Hit Drive the Loss
Ashland (NYSE:ASH) released fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 results on November 3, 2026, covering the quarter that ended September 30, 2026. Sales came to USD 498 million, up from USD 478 million, and the net loss was USD 16 million, or USD 0.35 per share, versus Net Income of USD 32 million a year earlier. The continuing-operations loss totaled USD 17 million. Unallocated and other expenses rose to USD 44 million from USD 11 million, which management ties to heavier restructuring and a cumulative translation adjustment from winding down its Argentine subsidiary. Excluding intangibles amortization, adjusted income reached USD 52 million, or USD 1.12 a share, up from USD 1.08, and adjusted EBITDA inched up 2% to USD 121 million.
Life Sciences and Personal Care Make Up for Hopewell Shortfalls
Ashland is a specialty additives and ingredients maker that serves pharmaceuticals, personal care and coatings. Life Sciences Revenue grew 4% to USD 180 million, pharma sales rose about 6%, and adjusted EBITDA increased 16% to USD 64 million. Personal Care revenue advanced 8% to USD 163 million, with adjusted EBITDA up 14% to USD 49 million. Specialty Additives revenue was flat at USD 131 million, while its adjusted EBITDA fell to USD 20 million from USD 29 million, as weaker output at the Hopewell plant left fixed costs spread across fewer units. Management believes the main productivity investments are finished and now targets higher output. Adjusted EBITDA Margin came in at 24.3%, down from 24.9%.
Fiscal 2027 Targets, Cash Generation and Leverage Exposures
Fiscal 2026 sales came to USD 1.863 billion, with adjusted EBITDA of USD 385 million, down from USD 401 million, and a margin of 20.7% compared with 22.0%. The company posted USD 4 million of net income after a USD 845 million loss in fiscal 2025 that included a USD 706 million Goodwill write-down. Operating Cash Flow climbed to USD 385 million, and year-end cash of about USD 480 million, USD 976 million of liquidity, net Debt of USD 891 million and net leverage of 2.3 times were reported. The guided range implies adjusted EBITDA growth of about 5% to 13% from the USD 385 million base (own arithmetic). Risk factors include raw material and freight swings, weak energy and resources Demand and execution at Hopewell. Management also projects free cash flow conversion above 40% of adjusted EBITDA.
Where Things Stand
The loss stems from charges rather than a breakdown in the core business. Ashland (NYSE:ASH) took a USD 17 million continuing-operations hit mostly from restructuring and a one-time translation entry, while adjusted EBITDA still expanded 2% and fiscal 2027 adjusted EBITDA is guided to USD 405 to 435 million. The forecast depends on Hopewell output recovering and pricing continuing to outpace costs. Fiscal 2027 quarterly results and plant output are the main gauges.
