Trio Economics Lift Output and Guidance Upward
Intrepid Potash (NYSE:IPI) announced third-quarter 2026 results on November 3, 2026. Sales from continuing operations were USD 51.0 million, roughly unchanged from USD 50.8 million a year earlier, while Net Income from continuing operations rose to USD 1.7 million. Trio, the low-chloride specialty fertilizer, grew sales 5% to USD 19.1 million, with an average net realized price of USD 408 per ton compared with USD 402. Cost per ton dropped to USD 224 from USD 257, which lifted Trio gross Margin by about 33%, while production rose 19% on better performance at the East mine, helped by a new continuous miner.
Potash Earnings Narrow as Volumes and Costs Move Against It
Potash, the muriate fertilizer for which the company is the sole US producer, moved the other way. Segment gross margin dropped to USD 3.6 million from USD 6.3 million, as sales volumes fell 5% on shipment timing and cost per ton climbed to USD 384 from USD 340 when sales shifted toward higher-cost sites. Output declined to 34 thousand tons from 41 thousand after the Moab harvest was intentionally postponed. Financial strength remains: cash stood at USD 152.3 million, the company had no borrowings, and USD 149.5 million was accessible under a USD 150 million Credit line maturing in March 2031. About USD 3.0 million of stock has been repurchased since July 1 under an expanded USD 50 million authorization.
Capital Plans, USDA Funding and Seasonal Risks
Management lifted its 2026 Capital spending guidance to about USD 45 million from USD 40 million and plans another USD 16 million for Trio in 2027. The company targets 320 to 330 thousand tons of Trio and 310 to 330 thousand tons of potash output in 2027. It was selected for roughly USD 139 million of proposed USDA matching funds toward a possible sulfate of potash plant near Carlsbad, New Mexico, though the final Investment decision is aimed for late 2027 and the money depends on conditions. The third quarter is typically the weakest for profit, and Operating Cash Flow came in at negative USD 4.8 million. A conference call was set for November 4, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. ET.
Where Things Stand
The guidance increase came from lower unit costs, firmer Trio pricing and higher East mine output rather than a one-off item, which is why the 33% margin gain carries weight. Quarterly profit is still small at USD 1.7 million, and potash margins weakened. For Intrepid Potash (NYSE:IPI), the picture is a strengthening Trio Business and a cash-heavy Balance Sheet set against uneven potash costs. The next markers are fourth-quarter price guidance of USD 385 to USD 395 per ton and the 2027 expansion projects.
