Debt Retirement Clears the Way for a Bigger Payout

Natural Resource Partners (NYSE:NRP), which owns mineral rights and holds a stake in a soda ash venture, submitted its Quarterly Report on November 4, 2026. The board declared the USD 2.34 distribution in November. According to the filing, which is consistent with what the partnership signaled during the year, repaying the last USD 13 million on the Opco Credit Facility during the third quarter allowed a significant increase. Earlier in 2026 the partnership paid USD 0.75 in February, May and August, along with a special USD 0.12 in March to help unitholders with tax liabilities. Future distributions will be set each quarter by the board, which weighs profitability, cash flow, Debt service, market conditions, estimated unitholder tax Liability and cash reserves.

Lower Royalties and Soda Ash Losses Pull Earnings Down

Net income of USD 26.5 million absorbed a USD 4.1 million Equity loss from Sisecam Wyoming, compared with a USD 2.4 million loss a year earlier, while depreciation, depletion and amortization rose to USD 6.5 million from USD 3.9 million. Interest expense dropped to USD 0.6 million from USD 1.8 million as debt declined. Across nine months, net income totaled USD 71.3 million, or USD 5.24 per diluted unit, against USD 105.4 million, or USD 7.77. Operating Cash Flow reached USD 118.0 million and free cash flow USD 81.1 million over the same period. Management attributed the drop to lower thermal coal royalties, production Lease minimums and gains on asset sales, partly balanced by stronger metallurgical coal and override royalty revenue.

Coal Price Outlook and the Sisecam Wyoming Position

Management said metallurgical coal pricing improved during the third quarter but expects pressure to persist while global steel Demand remains soft. Thermal coal prices are muted because Natural Gas is cheap and stockpiles are ample, and management does not foresee a meaningful change in 2027. In soda ash, weak prices reflect Chinese capacity expanding faster than global demand. The partnership invested USD 39.2 million in Sisecam Wyoming during the first quarter of 2026, has received no distributions from it this year, and does not expect any until the market rebalances. Since coal prices are volatile, cash flows from mineral rights can swing sharply. The filing provides no formal guidance and no price move.

Where Things Stand

Balance sheet clean-up is the trigger. With the Opco Credit Facility repaid and leverage at 0.1 times, the board raised the third-quarter distribution to USD 2.34 from USD 0.75. Natural Resource Partners (NYSE:NRP) did this while net income fell and soda ash stayed a drag, so the payout reflects available cash and low debt rather than rising profit. Future distributions are not promised and depend on board decisions each quarter. Watch metallurgical coal prices, any recovery at Sisecam Wyoming and the next quarterly declaration.
