Network Enablement Leads a Sharp Revenue Jump
VIAVI Solutions (NASDAQ:VIAV) announced fiscal first-quarter 2027 figures on November 4, 2026. Management said sales beat the top of its outlook. The Network and Service Enablement unit brought in USD 376.1 million, a 74.1% rise, and Optical Security and Performance Products delivered USD 93.2 million, up 12.2%. The CEO credited broad market Demand and fresh openings in Data Center and aerospace and defense. Americas accounted for 43.9% of revenue, Asia-Pacific 34.7% and EMEA 21.4%. Compared with USD 443.1 million in fiscal Q4 2026, revenue moved higher, while GAAP gross margin climbed 210 basis points sequentially to 61.2%. The year-earlier quarter produced USD 299.1 million.
Margins Expand and Earnings Turn Positive
On a GAAP basis gross margin was 61.2%, and 64.4% on a non-GAAP basis. GAAP Net Income rose to USD 76.0 million, a USD 97.4 million improvement, while non-GAAP net income totaled USD 125.8 million. GAAP operating profit was USD 81.7 million, and non-GAAP operating profit USD 136.1 million. Operating cash generation for the quarter reached USD 104.7 million. Cash, short-term investments and restricted cash together totaled USD 535.3 million. GAAP Operating Income climbed from USD 7.6 million a year before to USD 81.7 million, and the non-GAAP operating margin rose 500 basis points sequentially. Non-GAAP gross margin improved 430 basis points on the year to 64.4%, and non-GAAP net income increased 262.5%.
Second-Quarter Guidance and Capital Return
Management sees fiscal second-quarter revenue of USD 505 million to USD 515 million and non-GAAP EPS of USD 0.50 to USD 0.52 for the quarter ending January 2, 2027. Debt comprises USD 250.0 million of 0.625% convertible notes and USD 400.0 million of 3.75% senior notes, carrying a combined net Book Value of USD 642.5 million. The USD 500 million buyback authorization dated November 1, 2026 is not a commitment to repurchase. Stated risks include thin demand visibility, swings in product mix and declining average selling prices. Taking the USD 510 million midpoint, guided revenue would sit about 8.7% above the first quarter (calculated), although visibility remains limited. Leadership expects demand to keep momentum going. The buyback therefore sits alongside, rather than replacing, the guided second-quarter outlook. The guidance range is set against the USD 469.3 million first-quarter base cited earlier.
Where Things Stand
Largely through the Network and Service Enablement surge, combined with wider margins that flipped a prior-year GAAP loss into a USD 0.29 profit. The segment rose 74.1%, and the company guided the next quarter higher. Risks include thin visibility, mix shifts and price erosion. Watch the second-quarter outcome against its range, data center and defense order trends and deployment of the new buyback. The USD 500 million program is optional.
