Lower Other Expense Narrows the Loss Even as Operations Weaken
Lumen Technologies (NASDAQ:LUMN) published its Quarterly Report on November 4, 2026. The net loss narrowed by USD 356 million (calculated), though operating loss grew to USD 167 million from USD 116 million. Total other expense, net, declined to USD 168 million from USD 697 million, which accounts for the improvement. The income tax line showed a USD 70 million benefit, down from USD 192 million. For nine months, Operating Income stood at USD 347 million versus a USD 612 million operating loss, and the net loss was USD 666 million compared with USD 1.737 billion, the earlier figure including a USD 628 million Goodwill write-down.
Fiber Sale Cuts Consumer Revenue as Strategic Lines Expand
Lumen finalized the divestiture of its Mass Markets Fiber-to-the-Home operations in 11 states to an AT&T Subsidiary on February 2, 2026. Accordingly, Fiber Broadband revenue receded to USD 17 million from USD 225 million, and Mass Markets revenue overall fell 42% to USD 369 million. Business segment revenue slipped 4% to USD 2.346 billion. Inside that group, Strategic revenue increased USD 112 million, with USD 59 million from dark fiber and conduit and USD 12 million from IP services contributing. Legacy revenue dropped 17% to USD 1.067 billion, reflecting declines of USD 65 million in VPN and USD 84 million in voice and private line services.
Alkira Purchase, Cash Flow Shift and the Debt Stack
A Level 3 Communications unit acquired Alkira on July 1, 2026, paying aggregate cash consideration of USD 485 million, with customary adjustments still open. Cash at September 30 was USD 978 million, the revolver offered USD 677 million of availability, and total indebtedness reached USD 13.3 billion. Nine-month Operating Cash Flow declined to USD 2.812 billion from USD 4.176 billion, chiefly because the sale removed income-generating Assets and reduced operating cash received. Investing inflows totaled USD 1.803 billion, whereas financing outflows of USD 4.639 billion went mostly toward debt reduction. Stock-based compensation reached USD 18 million in the quarter, with Depreciation and amortization at USD 670 million. The filing identifies USD 2.4 billion of unhedged floating-rate debt as an Interest Rate exposure.
Where Things Stand
Mostly lower other expense, not operations. Lumen Technologies (NASDAQ:LUMN) narrowed its loss through a sharp drop in other expense, yet it still posted a wider operating loss, falling revenue and lower quarterly adjusted EBITDA. Strategic revenue grew 10%, and a large debt paydown points to a changing mix. No guidance figures appeared in the material reviewed. Watch Strategic and Legacy revenue trends, Alkira integration, interest costs on USD 13.3 billion of debt and whether operating cash flow stabilizes after the divestiture.
