Canada Market Round-Up

The S&P/TSX Composite Index ended the previous week on a weak note, declining 3.76% to close at 31,317.41, extending its cautious tone into March 20, 2026. Despite the broader weakness, selective strength was observed across key sectors such as basic materials, technology, consumer non-cyclicals, industrials, energy, healthcare, financials, consumer cyclicals, real estate, and utilities, indicating a gradual improvement in investor risk appetite. From a technical perspective, the index continues to exhibit a negative short-term outlook. However, it remains comfortably above a rising trendline support and the 50-period Simple Moving Average (SMA), reinforcing the broader bullish structure and suggesting sustained buying interest during market pullbacks. Immediate resistance is placed near the 32,600 level, where a decisive breakout could pave the way for further upside momentum. On the downside, strong support is seen around 31,200; a sustained move below this level may trigger a short-term corrective phase. The weekly Relative Strength Index (RSI), currently at 52.86, continues to signal healthy bullish momentum within the broader trend.

On the macro front, the upcoming major economic events that may impact the Canadian market sentiment include CA Flash Manufacturing PMI, US Revised UoM Consumer Sentiment and US Unemployment Claims.
