Canada Market Round-Up

S&P/TSX Composite Index ended the previous week on a subdued note, slipping marginally by 0.04% to close at 33,891.18, extending its soft momentum into May 01, 2026. Sectoral performance remained mixed, with gains in energy and technology reflecting a gradual pickup in investor risk appetite across both defensive and growth segments. However, persistent weakness across consumer non-cyclicals, industrials, financials, consumer cyclicals, real estate, healthcare, basic materials, and utilities capped broader market upside. From a technical perspective, the index maintains a cautiously optimistic short-term outlook. It continues to trade above a rising trendline support and its 50-period Simple Moving Average (SMA), reinforcing the underlying bullish structure and suggesting that buying interest remains active on dips. Immediate resistance is seen near the 34,200 level; a decisive breakout above this barrier could trigger further upward momentum. On the downside, strong support is placed around 33,000. A sustained breach below this level may lead to a short-term corrective phase. Meanwhile, the weekly Relative Strength Index (RSI), currently at 59.61, indicates healthy momentum, supporting the broader uptrend while still leaving room for additional gains.

On the macro front, the upcoming major economic events that may impact the Canadian market sentiment include CA Unemployment Rate, US Non-Farm Employment Change and US Unemployment Claims.
