NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE: NRG)

NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE: NRG) stands among the largest retail energy providers in the United States, serving around 7 million customers—a footprint strengthened by its 2021 purchase of Direct Energy.

Recommendation Rationale – SELL at USD 186.16

  • Trading Near Resistance Level: NRG’s share price surpassed its R2 level recommended on 21 January 2026, the 14-day RSI is now around 80.76, trading in overbought territory. Therefore, share price can face resistance at the current levels.
  • Operating Income Decline: Operating income decreased to USD 1,845 million in FY25 from USD 2,424 million in FY24, indicating margin compression that impacted overall profitability.
  • Rising Long-Term Debt Levels: Long-term debt and finance leases increased to USD 16,412 million as of December 31, 2025, from USD 9,812 million as of December 31, 2024, indicating higher leverage that may elevate financial risk.
  • Overvalued Multiples: On a forward 12-month – key valuation multiples (EV/EBITDA, Price/Earnings, Price/ Book Value and Price/Cash Flow) are higher than average of the Utilities’ sector. Hence, the stock looks overvalued.
  • Operational Risk: Execution risks in energy transition investments, exposure to weather-driven demand volatility, and intense competition in retail power and energy solutions markets may increase costs, pressure margins, and create earnings uncertainty.

NRG’s Daily Price Chart

Valuation Methodology: Price/Earnings Approach (FY December'26E) (Illustrative)

Stock might trade at a slight premium to its peers considering YoY rise in revenue and cash and cash equivalents, advancing 5+GW natural gas plant partnerships, expanding generation capacity via LS Power. For conducting the valuation, peers such as Duke Energy Corp (NYSE: DUK), FirstEnergy Corp (NYSE: FE), and Exelon Corp (NASDAQ: EXC) have been considered.

NRG’s stock price has been trending higher; however, the 14-period RSI is hovering in overbought territory, suggesting that the upward momentum may begin to fade as buying pressure weakens. Given the current market environment and associated risks, a ‘Sell’ rating is assigned to NRG at the current market price of USD 186.16 as of February 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. EST.

Markets are trading in a highly volatile zone currently due to certain macro-economic issues and prevailing geopolitical tensions. Therefore, it is prudent to follow a cautious approach while investing.
