Impairments Flip Adjusted Profit Into a Reported Loss

Unum Group (NYSE:UNM) posted a third quarter 2026 net loss of USD 419.7 million on November 3, 2026. The distance from adjusted operating income of USD 349.0 million comes from a before-tax net investment loss of USD 853.0 million, mainly impairments recognized because the company plans to transfer assets supporting the 2026 Fortitude Re long-term care reinsurance deal, along with a before-tax Closed Block adjusted operating loss of USD 135.6 million, partly offset by a tax benefit of USD 207.9 million. Core operations premium grew 4.7% on a constant currency basis, and adjusted operating Return on Equity was 21.3%. The company also cited a net tax-only benefit of USD 12.0 million.

Group Disability Claims Pull Down the Earnings Base

The chief executive said underlying earnings fell short of expectations, as strong voluntary benefits results were offset by higher claim submissions in group disability. Unum US adjusted operating income fell 35.2% to USD 315.3 million on premium income of USD 1,846.6 million, up 5.2%. Group disability premium rose 4.0% to USD 816.6 million, yet the benefit ratio, which compares claims with premium, climbed to 67.1% due to less favorable reserve updates, higher incidence, earlier pricing actions and larger long-term disability claims. Unum International earned only USD 0.2 million against USD 44.2 million, as UK sales fell 45.9%. Colonial Life moved the other way, with segment income up 35.0% to USD 169.4 million and a benefit ratio improved to 38.0%.

Reserve Changes, Non-GAAP Redefinition and Capital Returns

Annual reserve assumption updates lifted GAAP net income by USD 23.5 million. After discussions with Securities and Exchange Commission staff during an ongoing comment letter review, the company revised its adjusted operating income definition, so full-year adjusted figures now include reserve assumption updates, while GAAP net income is unchanged. Capital return totaled about USD 200 million of Buybacks and USD 80.1 million of dividends, bringing year-to-date returns to USD 1,038.5 million. Holding Company Liquidity stood at USD 1.4 billion, risk-based capital was about 485%, and Book Value per share reached USD 68.90, up 6.7% year over year. Items to watch include the Fortitude Re closing, group disability claim trends and the Closed Block reserve outlook.

Where Things Stand

The loss is largely an accounting and portfolio-transfer effect, while the operating picture is weaker yet still profitable. Unum Group (NYSE:UNM) lost USD 419.7 million after USD 853.0 million of before-tax investment losses, yet adjusted operating income of USD 349.0 million still generated a 21.3% adjusted return on equity in core operations. Relative to USD 479.4 million a year earlier, the drop reflects group disability claims, which management said came in worse than expected. Investors will focus on the Fortitude Re closing and on signs that disability incidence and claim size are stabilizing.
