Transition Period Sales Gains Power the Share Advance
FedEx Freight (NYSE:FDXF) is up 14.61% today at $125.72, following the release of results for a one-time four-month transition period running from June 1 to September 30, 2026. The reporting window reflects a switch to calendar-year reporting after the spin-off from FedEx (NYSE:FDX).
Revenue rose 9.2% to $3.3 billion, aided mainly by fuel surcharges, heavier shipments, an additional operating day and firmer base pricing. Lower volumes took some of the edge off, with average daily shipments slipping 1.4% to 88.9 thousand.
Offering Priority, Economy and Direct services, the company holds the top spot among less-than-truckload carriers in North America. Its footprint includes roughly 30,000 vehicles, more than 365 locations and about 40,000 employees.
Operating Profit Up 16.4% as GAAP Results and Per-Share Figures Decline
Adjusted operating income grew 16.4% to $510 million, and the adjusted margin widened 90 basis points to 15.5%. On a GAAP basis, operating income fell 6.1% to $383 million, with an 11.7% margin that was 190 basis points lower.
Diluted EPS of $1.54 dropped 43%, while adjusted EPS of $2.15 fell 24.6%. The adjusted figures leave out $127 million in spin-off expenses. Management cited higher pay, transition service costs and standalone technology Investment as pressures.
Revenue per shipment increased 10.1% to $413.00, but excluding fuel the gain was only 1.6%. Management also pointed to a second straight quarter with a record-low claims ratio, which it tied to a stronger customer experience.
Operating Cash Flow Falls Sharply as Capital Spending Climbs
Operating cash flow came in at $390 million, versus $1.085 billion a year earlier, a period helped by large intercompany movements with the former parent. Capital Expenditure climbed to $151 million from $55 million. The company finished with $388 million in cash and total Liquidity of $1.6 billion, after repaying $115 million of Debt principal.
No Dividend or buyback has been declared yet. Management intends to unveil a dividend and share repurchase plan for calendar 2027, pending board approval.
Market data shows a market Capitalization near $18.7 billion, trailing revenue around $8.8 billion, a price-to-earnings ratio near 28.5 and a 52-week range of $103.48 to $200.00. The average analyst price target was about $145.43.
Raised Full-Period Outlook Puts the December Quarter in Focus
For the stretch from June 1 through December 31, 2026, the company now projects revenue of $5.58 billion to $5.65 billion and adjusted operating income of $695 million to $715 million. The earlier adjusted range was $605 million to $645 million. GAAP operating income guidance was reduced to $465 million to $485 million.
For the three months ending December 31, the outlook calls for revenue of $2.30 billion to $2.37 billion and adjusted operating income of $185 million to $205 million, versus $162 million a year earlier. Management attributed the view to fuel tailwinds and slightly higher Volume assumptions. Investors will track how volumes and Yield develop, and whether the 2027 capital return plan is spelled out in detail.
