Highlights

  • QNX Sound is planned for use in next-generation luxury electric vehicles launching in China in 2026.
  • Independent analysis outlines potential reductions in hardware costs, weight, and circuit board space.
  • The platform combines multiple in-vehicle audio functions into a single software-based system.

QNX, the automotive software division of BlackBerry Limited (TSX:BB), stated that a major Chinese automaker intends to integrate QNX Sound into its luxury electric vehicle models scheduled for release in 2026. The identity of the automaker was not disclosed. QNX Sound is designed for software-defined vehicles and separates audio and acoustics software from underlying hardware components.

The system is intended to bring together different vehicle audio functions—such as voice processing, media playback, alert sounds, and active noise management—within one software platform. By shifting more functionality to software, the approach aims to simplify system architecture and reduce reliance on specialized hardware components traditionally used in vehicle audio systems.

Hardware and Cost Implications

An assessment by engineering consultancy Munro & Associates examined the potential impact of deploying QNX Sound in vehicle platforms. According to the study, vehicles using the system could see hardware cost savings that range from approximately USD 21 per mass-market vehicle to as much as USD 98 per premium model.

The analysis also indicated that printed circuit board (PCB) area associated with audio hardware could be reduced by up to 44%, enabling more compact designs. In addition, the weight of audio-related hardware may decline by as much as 28%, which could have secondary effects on vehicle packaging and overall efficiency.

The software-based architecture removes the need for certain dedicated digital signal processors and allows for simplified amplifier designs. This could enable automakers to standardize audio hardware across multiple vehicle models and reduce the number of distinct components used in production.

Broader Industry Use

QNX Sound has been adopted by several automotive manufacturers and suppliers worldwide for use in infotainment systems, digital cockpits, advanced driver assistance systems, and centralized vehicle controllers. The platform also received a “Product of the Year” recognition at the 2025 International Sound Awards.
