Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil&Gas, Industrials and Basic Materials sectors led shares higher while losses in the Technology, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.59% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.00%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.21%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 2.65% or 0.52 points to trade at 20.13 at the close. Meanwhile, Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) added 1.91% or 5.13 points to end at 274.32 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.46% or 3.30 points to 229.79 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which fell 0.91% or 3.38 points to trade at 367.06 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 0.73% or 1.89 points to end at 257.01 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was down 0.58% or 0.24 points to 41.25.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) which rose 14.11% to 100.18, Cooper Companies Inc (NASDAQ:COO) which was up 11.84% to settle at 105.73 and West Pharmaceutical Services Inc (NYSE:WST) which gained 5.77% to close at 314.79.

The worst performers were Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) which was down 32.15% to 84.03 in late trade, Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which lost 10.26% to settle at 84.77 and NetApp Inc (NASDAQ:NTAP) which was down 9.64% to 119.20 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were XORTX Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:XRTX) which rose 130.77% to 2.70, Biocardia Inc (NASDAQ:BCDA) which was up 82.73% to settle at 4.02 and Innovative Eyewear Inc (NASDAQ:LUCY) which gained 53.78% to close at 5.09.

The worst performers were iLearningEngines Inc (NASDAQ:AILE) which was down 53.29% to 1.49 in late trade, Ensysce Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:ENSC) which lost 34.67% to settle at 0.41 and Portage Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:PRTG) which was down 32.03% to 4.52 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1928 to 880 and 99 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1974 rose and 1284 declined, while 157 ended unchanged.

Shares in Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 14.11% or 12.39 to 100.18. Shares in Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) fell to 5-year lows; losing 32.15% or 39.81 to 84.03. Shares in Cooper Companies Inc (NASDAQ:COO) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 11.84% or 11.19 to 105.73. Shares in Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) fell to 52-week lows; losing 10.26% or 9.69 to 84.77. Shares in iLearningEngines Inc (NASDAQ:AILE) fell to all time lows; losing 53.29% or 1.70 to 1.49.



The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.53% to 15.65.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.67% or 17.00 to $2,554.80 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.88% or 1.40 to hit $75.92 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.68% or 1.30 to trade at $78.88 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.38% to 1.11, while USD/JPY rose 0.28% to 144.97.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.32% at 101.31.
