Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should. In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Allstate (NYSE:ALL), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Allstate with the means to add long-term value to shareholders. Allstate's Earnings Per Share Are Growing Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. We can see that in the last three years Allstate grew its EPS by 8.8% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up. One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. It's noted that Allstate's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. The music to the ears of Allstate shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 3.5% to 8.4% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. That's great to see, on both counts. The chart below shows how the company's bottom and top lines have progressed over time. Are Allstate Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders? We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$56b company like Allstate. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$319m. We note that this amounts to 0.6% of the company, which may be small owing to the sheer size of Allstate but it's still worth mentioning. This should still be a great incentive for management to maximise shareholder value. Story Continues Is Allstate Worth Keeping An Eye On? As previously touched on, Allstate is a growing business, which is encouraging. To add an extra spark to the fire, significant insider ownership in the company is another highlight. That combination is very appealing. So yes, we do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. Even so, be aware that Allstate is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about...
