If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). For example, the Radware Ltd. (NASDAQ:RDWR) share price is up 39% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 10.0% (not including dividends). So that should have shareholders smiling. Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 8.8% in the last three years. Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns. To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement. Radware went from making a loss to reporting a profit, in the last year. When a company has just transitioned to profitability, earnings per share growth is not always the best way to look at the share price action. However the year on year revenue growth of 5.2% would help. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth. A Different Perspective It's nice to see that Radware shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 39% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 0.2% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
