Cineplex Inc. (TSX: CGX) and its research partner Amplified have released a Canadian study estimating that low-attention media environments cost advertisers $1.52 billion in wasted spend every year. The report, titled The Eye-Watering Cost of Dull Media – Canada Edition, measures active attention across cinema, social, and web channels using biometric methods. The findings position cinema as the highest-attention environment studied, a result that investors in Cineplex's media business may find relevant to its advertising revenue proposition.

Key Points

  • Cineplex Inc. (TSX: CGX) released the study jointly with Amplified, the attention-measurement research firm
  • The research estimates a $1.52 billion annual media-efficiency penalty associated with dull, low-attention media in Canada
  • Cinema generated 72% active attention and 17.5 seconds of active viewing per exposure versus 3.2 seconds on Facebook and 0.3 seconds on web
  • Investors may watch whether these findings support Cineplex Media's advertising sales positioning with Canadian marketers

How Amplified Measured Attention Across Canadian Media Environments

The study measured 5,400 real ad views across cinema, Facebook, and web among Canadian audiences using eye tracking and facial detection in natural viewing environments. Amplified then modelled approximately 360,000 additional ad exposures across Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok, and Broadcast Video on Demand. Attention results were linked to two brand-response measures: Short-Term Advertising Strength, which compares immediate brand choice between exposed and unexposed audiences, and Mental Availability, which tracks brand associations relevant to future purchase situations.

The $1.52 Billion Penalty and What "Dull Media" Means for Advertisers

The release defines dull media as environments where ads may be delivered or viewable but receive little actual human attention. Amplified's framework estimated that media waste rose from 33% in high-attention environments to 92% in extremely low-attention environments. The research calculates this gap as equivalent to approximately 25 cents of additional investment required for every dollar spent in lower-attention settings to achieve comparable advertising outcomes. The report also found that challenger brands experienced an approximately four times faster decline in effectiveness than established brands as media environments became lower attention.

Cinema's Role in Strengthening Downstream Digital Advertising

Beyond direct attention comparisons, the study found that a prior cinema exposure improved brand outcomes generated by subsequent web advertising compared with web advertising alone. Cinema exposure was also linked to stronger brand choice and memory associations relative to Facebook or web. Kristie Painting, EVP and Managing Director of Cineplex Media, stated in the release that the research helps Canadian marketers consider the quality of exposure alongside traditional planning metrics.
