Rate Base Growth and Hot Weather Lift Third-Quarter Earnings
MGE Energy (NASDAQ:MGEE) released its 10-Q on November 4, 2026, for the three months ended September 30. Net Income climbed to USD 56.4 million. Its principal utility arm, MGE, reported USD 45.2 million compared with USD 34.1 million a year ago. Management links the Electric Utility improvement to a bigger rate base, driven by investments authorized in the 2026/2027 rate case, along with more Equity AFUDC on the Koshkonong, High Noon and Sunnyside projects. Electric Revenue went up USD 17.4 million to USD 172.7 million. That figure includes USD 5.5 million of revenue subject to refund and USD 4.1 million from sales into the market, both of which are largely matched by costs.
Segment Mix, Transmission Income and Venture Gains
Nonregulated Energy brought in USD 6.7 million, up from USD 6.3 million, while Transmission Investments rose to USD 2.9 million from USD 2.4 million thanks to bigger equity returns on the ATC stake. The All Other segment booked USD 2.5 million, and the nine-month gain was credited partly to Venture Capital fund results. Retail electricity volume grew 4.0% to 953.6 million kilowatt-hours, but sales to the market fell 25.0% in volume. Retail rates generated USD 2.8 million more than in the prior year, after regulators approved a 0.15% electric rise for 2026. The electric rate increase for 2027 is set at 3.63%, though a fuel plan would reduce it to 2.31%.
Renewable Buildout, Financing Authority and Cost Risks
Solar projects carry an estimated cost share of USD 539 million, battery projects USD 200 million and wind USD 73 million, and MGE is authorized to recover 100% of AFUDC on them. The regulator, on September 30, 2026, allowed up to USD 800 million of long-term borrowing through 2029 and USD 250 million of short-term borrowing. Equity is also being raised through at-the-market and forward programs. Solar Import rules and tariffs may push project costs higher, and large-load customers introduce uncertainty. Deferred fuel savings of USD 7.6 million are pending regulatory review in 2027. Elm Road Units are scheduled to move off coal by the close of 2032. A Dividend of USD 0.508 per share was declared, against USD 0.475 previously.
Where Things Stand
Rate base growth and a hotter summer account for most of the rise, rather than a one-off event. MGE Energy (NASDAQ:MGEE) lifted third-quarter EPS per diluted share roughly 21% (calculated) to USD 1.48, with Electric Utility earnings higher by USD 11.6 million (calculated). No numeric earnings guidance appears in the filing. Next, follow the regulator's 2027 fuel plan decision, expected by the end of 2026, along with solar and battery construction costs, Tariff effects and any large-load customer news.
